23/11 - EVALUATION BY COMPETENCIES

Imagen
Hi! In this class we start with a kahoot related to the contents that we gave the previous day of evaluation and assessment. I was on the podium! This was very useful since it made me realize the things that I had understood better in the previous class and where I should focus more on myself for the exam. In addition, we reflect in pairs on whether the tasks include punishment or not, which I believe is a reinforcement that serves the child well to consolidate what they have learned.  We also talked about the importance of evaluation by competencies since it allows us to emphasize employee development and create a training system that allows them to improve. To practice it, in pairs, we create a rubric to evaluate the activity we did in the last session. Finally, since Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 23rd of November, we did a kahoot to see how much we knew about this holiday and I have to say that I thought I would know less!

16/11 - SUMMATIVE APPROACH

Imagen
Hi! In this class, we continue with the concept of assessment . As we have already seen, assessment is more than testing, and it means different things in different contexts, carried out for different purposes. Futhermore, summative evaluation is defined by OECD as "a study conducted at the end of an intervention (or a phase of that intervention) to determine the extent to which anticipated outcomes were produced. Summative evaluation is intended to provide information about the worth of the program." Some teachers use a variety of ways to assess learning, such as tick sheets to summarize a child’s achievements at a point in schooling and portfolios, which are a useful way of keeping evidence of learning. Also, a portfolio review can be given to families to provide them with information. Additionally, we discussed a term that I did not know how to differentiate, which is evaluation and qualification . While evaluation provides evidence of the student's learning, qualific...

15/11 - ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

Imagen
Hello everyone! This class was focused on assessment and evaluation . The generic goal of most evaluations is to provide "useful feedback." Something I learned is that assessment and evaluation are not the same; I had always thought they were synonymous with different names. However, assessment focuses on measuring learning progress and achievement, while evaluation focuses on making judgments and decisions based on collected data. As educators, we should not instill fear in children with the word "exam" as it causes them stress; we can tell them that we are going to do an exercise so they don't get scared. Additionally, many children fail due to the type of evaluation they undergo (memorization), as this favors children with better memory rather than the rest.  Assessment is seen as an integral part of the learning and teaching process rather than being 'added on' for summative purposes. Finally, I also learned the difference between "assessment fo...

9/11 - LESSON PLANNING

Imagen
This lecture focused on lesson planning as it is always important, but is essential when teaching very young children as this age group requires a wide variety of short activities. As teachers, we need some tips to follow a perfect lesson planning, like thinking about the main topic of the lesson and what you want to achieve or thinking about the way the whole lesson works. It is very important to make visuals, regardless of whether you draw well or badly. Teacher Maribel told us several things and we had to draw them to see our creativity. In addition, she also showed us videos in which they teach you step by step how to make drawings. Other very good resources are limericks, chants, rhymes and songs. The whole class wrote a Limerick and it was very funny. Stories are also important for young children on many levels. In class, we read a story between several students playing each animal with its respective voice, since drama is essential to teach children.

8/11 - TEACHING ENGLISH TO YOUNG LEARNERS

Imagen
Hello everyone! Today the main topic was who to teach English to young learners. We were studying the characteristics that the students have and how we as teachers can help them. I was surprised by the difference between the youngest children in primary school and the older ones, since, for example, between the ages of 6 and 10, children are more curious, creative, etc. However, what 10-12 year old children have is a sense of justice and are more independent. In the age under seven children learn through doing things and playing and they acquire through hearing and experiencing lots of English. In contrast, teaching children from 7 to 12 years we have to take into account that we have to encourage them to read in English, to work meanings out for themselves, encourage creative writing and help them to experiment with language. We were also debating in pairs questions such as what is the best age for reading another language? We believe that the best thing is that the earlier a child st...

2/11 - SYLLABUS AND UNITS OF WORK

Imagen
Hi! In today's lesson we were working on the syllabus and the units of work. I consider that these concepts are very important since as technicians we need to plan our activity to contextualize it in our environment and to get away from the institutionalism and activism. A concept that I did not know is syllabus, which means is a set of decisions made by the teachers in a school, with respect to a subject or area and the level in the framework of the teaching and learning process. On the other hand, the elements of the curriculum that determine the process of teaching and learning are: objectives, key competences, the basic knowledge, teaching methodology and the assessment criteria. Another very important concept since we are going to work with it are the didactic units. This is a kind of a lesson plan and their main function is to structure the different topics that will be covered in a specific period to achieve the students' learning goal.  To carry out a lesson planning it...
